Anthropic has released Claude Duet, a new app in which Claude works as a proactive agent rather than waiting for you to type a question. It was announced on 21 October 2026 as a research preview, and access is through a waitlist.

What launched

Claude Duet is a standalone app, separate from the main Claude app. Anthropic describes it as a proactive agent aimed at professionals and small business owners. It is powered by Claude Opus 5.5, and you cannot choose a different model.

The main features Anthropic lists are:

  • Morning brief: each morning it reviews your connected apps, such as email and calendar, highlights priorities and may start drafting replies for you to review.
  • Check-ins: it checks your connected accounts every few hours and messages you when something needs attention. You can set what you want to hear about and how often.
  • Larger tasks: you can ask it to schedule meetings, build dashboards, create financial or sales forecasts, or prototype web apps. Finished files such as slide decks and financial models appear in a Make tab.
  • One ongoing thread: you message it by typing or voice, and it carries over your memory, skills and connected apps from your Claude account.
  • Background work: it runs on its own cloud computer with its own browser, so your phone or laptop does not need to stay on. You get a notification when a task is finished or needs your review.

Anthropic says Claude Duet can use more than 6,000 connectors and plugins. Named examples include Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot and Docusign. Microsoft 365 is not yet available.

Approvals and safety

Before Claude Duet sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it is designed to show you what it plans to do and wait for your approval. Some actions are blocked even if you approve them, including trading securities and moving money between accounts.

Purchases go through Link by Stripe or Shop Pay, using a one-time card for each purchase. Anthropic also says Claude Duet never directly sees your passwords or sign-in tokens.

Who can use it and where

For now, Claude Duet is only for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States, through a waitlist. Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet, although Anthropic says it plans to add them later.

It is available as an app on iPhone and Android, and on the web at claude.ai. Invitations go out in waves, so joining the waitlist does not guarantee a start date.

That means Australian users cannot get Claude Duet at the moment. Anthropic has not announced a date for other countries.

What it costs

During the research preview, Claude Duet is included with Pro and Max at no extra cost. Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month with an annual subscription ($200 billed up front). Max is listed from $100 a month. Prices shown do not include applicable tax.

There is a catch with usage. Claude Duet draws from the same five-hour and weekly limits as the rest of your Claude plan. Background work, such as the morning brief and check-ins, also counts, so you may reach your limits sooner.

When you are admitted from the waitlist, Anthropic gives you one full reset of both your five-hour and weekly limits. That reset is available until 30 November 2026.

Known limitations

Anthropic lists these limits:

  • It may misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent.
  • Because it checks accounts at set intervals, something urgent can wait until the next check.
  • You cannot watch or take over its browser yet.
  • It cannot make phone calls or send texts.

What it means for ordinary users

Most AI chat apps only act when you ask. Claude Duet is Anthropic's move towards an assistant that watches your inbox, calendar and business tools and comes to you first.

The trade-off is access. To be useful it needs to connect to your email, calendar and other accounts, so it is worth thinking about which apps you connect. Anthropic says you can disconnect any app at any time, although memory of information it has already seen is kept.

If you are in Australia, there is nothing to sign up for yet. If you already pay for Claude Pro or Max, it is worth watching for an expansion beyond the US.
