Perplexity is built around searching the web and giving answers with source links, while ChatGPT is a general assistant for writing, analysis, images, voice and coding that can also search the web. Both have a free plan. Perplexity Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both listed at $20 per month, so the better choice depends on whether you mostly look things up or mostly create and work with the assistant.
This guide compares the two using what each company says on its own website, checked on 20 October 2026.
| Perplexity | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Main idea | An "answer engine" that searches the web and gives answers backed by sources | A general AI assistant that can also search the web |
| Free plan | Yes. Practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches per day, 1 Research query per month | Yes. Unlimited text chats (subject to abuse guardrails), limited uploads, images and voice |

Perplexity's help centre describes it as an AI-powered search engine. You ask a question, it searches the web, and it gives a conversational answer "backed by verifiable sources", with citations and links to the original pages. Perplexity calls this an "answer engine" and contrasts it with traditional search engines that leave you to sort through a list of links. It also encourages you to double-check the sources.
Who it suits: people who use AI mainly to research, check facts, compare products or follow current topics, and who want links they can open to verify what they read.
Perplexity's pages also describe a credit system, where 100 credits equal $1. Max includes 10,000 credits per month. Pro has no set monthly amount of credits, though Perplexity says paid Consumer Pro plans also include a weekly amount of Computer usage. See Perplexity's plans page and your account settings for the current details, as Perplexity notes that prices are subject to change.
On Perplexity's Pro Search, the help centre explains the difference from a standard search: standard search gives "fast, basic answers" from one or two sources, while Pro Search gives "slower, in-depth answers" drawing on dozens of sources, with a choice of models.
ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant. As well as chatting, OpenAI lists image creation, voice chats, file uploads, deep research, memory, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and Codex (its coding tool), depending on the plan.
ChatGPT can search the web too. OpenAI's help centre says it may search automatically when a question would benefit from current information, or you can start a search yourself from the tools menu. Search is available on the Free plan, on paid plans, and for people who are not signed in. Answers may include citations that you can select to open the source. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so it is worth opening the sources to confirm them.
Who it suits: people who want one assistant for many jobs, such as drafting, summarising, brainstorming, working with files and images, and coding help, with web search as one of several tools.
These come from OpenAI's official pricing page and help centre:
Neither tool is perfect at sourcing. Both companies tell you to check the cited pages yourself.
You can read more about each tool on our Perplexity page and ChatGPT page.
We checked both tools against their official websites on 20 October 2026: Perplexity's help centre and blog, and OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page and help centre. We did not use review sites. Where an official page did not state a fact, or where the pages disagreed, we left it out. We did not compare answer accuracy or speed, because we could not confirm that from official pages.
Yes. Perplexity's help centre lists a free plan with practically unlimited basic searches, 3 Pro Searches per day, 1 Research query per month and limited basic file uploads.
A Perplexity article dated 13 October 2026 lists Pro at $20 a month and Max at $200 a month. Perplexity says prices are subject to change.
Perplexity is designed around web search with source links, which many people like for research. ChatGPT can also search and cite sources. Neither company claims perfect accuracy, so check the sources either way.
Yes. The Free plan includes unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, plus limited uploads, image creation, voice chats and deep research. Web search is available on Free.
OpenAI's help centre lists Plus at $20 per month, billed monthly. Pro starts at $100 per month.
