Short answer: Choose Claude if you do a lot of reading, writing or coding and want to work with large documents, projects and Claude Code on a single $20 per month plan. Choose ChatGPT if you want a wider mix of paid tiers (Go, Plus and three Pro levels) and features such as image generation listed on its plans. Both have free plans, so try each on your own work first.

This guide uses only what Anthropic and OpenAI state on their own websites as of 20 October 2026. We do not claim one is smarter or more accurate than the other, because neither company publishes a head-to-head comparison for everyday use.

Claude free plan

Anthropic lists Claude Free at $0. It includes the Sonnet and Haiku models, web search, file creation and code execution, voice mode, memory, Skills, connectors, Artifacts and up to 5 projects. Usage limits reset on a rolling five-hour window. The Free plan does not include Opus, Claude Code, Research or Claude in Chrome.

Claude paid plans

  • Pro - $17 per month on annual billing ($200 billed up front), or $20 per month billed monthly. Anthropic says Fable is available on Pro through usage credits.
  • Max - from $100 per month, billed monthly. 5x or 20x the Pro usage per session, plus higher output limits, early access to advanced features and priority access at busy times. It lists Fable at 50% of weekly limits.
  • Team - from $20 per seat per month billed annually ($25 billed monthly). For 2 to 150 users, with central billing, SSO and admin controls. A Premium seat is $100 per seat per month billed annually ($125 monthly).

Anthropic notes that displayed prices do not include applicable tax, and that prices and plans are subject to change.

Claude features worth knowing

  • Models: Anthropic's model page lists Claude Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. It describes Fable 5.1 as its most capable model open to all customers.
  • File uploads: Anthropic's help centre states up to 20 files per chat, 500MB per file, and PDFs up to 1,000 pages. PDFs of 100 pages or fewer are read for text and visuals, and longer PDFs for text only.
  • Voice and web search: both are listed as included on every plan.
  • Image generation: the pricing page does not mention image generation, so we cannot say whether it is offered. Check Anthropic's help pages if you need it.
  • Integrations: connectors on every plan, plus Claude for Microsoft 365 and Claude in Chrome from Pro.
  • Context and usage limits: the pricing page says context windows are up to 1M tokens, varying by model. Usage is described relative to other plans (for example, at least 5x Free for Pro) and not as message counts.

ChatGPT: what it is and who it suits

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant. It suits people who want a choice of paid levels, from a low-cost plan to very high usage, with image generation, voice and tools such as scheduled tasks and custom GPTs in the same app.

ChatGPT free plan

OpenAI's pricing page lists Free with unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails. Messages with uploads and image creation are limited. Web search is included, deep research is limited, and projects are available. Model names for Free and Go differ between OpenAI's pricing and help pages, so check OpenAI's model help page for the current default.

ChatGPT paid plans

  • Go - $8 USD per month in the US. This comes from OpenAI's January 2026 Go announcement, which says Go pricing is localised in some markets. OpenAI's current pricing page showed no dollar figure when we checked, so confirm the price for your country. The pricing page says Go may include ads.
  • Plus - $20 per month. OpenAI's help centre states $20 per month, billed monthly, with no annual billing. It lists priority access at peak times, higher usage limits, voice conversations, image generation, file uploads and Deep Research where available.
  • Pro - $100, $200 or $500 per month. Pro includes Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory and file uploads. Only the $500 tier includes "Ultrafast". OpenAI states that Pro does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model.

Business and Enterprise plans are also available for teams, but the pricing page does not list their prices.

ChatGPT features worth knowing

  • Models: the GPT-6 options in the model menu are powered by GPT-6 Sol, with GPT-6 Pro powered by GPT-6 Astra. Plus gets Medium and High thinking levels, while Pro adds Extra High and the Pro model.
  • File uploads: limited on Free, with more on Go and Plus.
  • Image generation: limited on Free, more on Go, more complex on Plus, and unlimited and faster on Pro.
  • Voice: listed on every plan, expanded on Plus and unlimited on Pro. Voice with video is listed for Go, Plus and Pro.

How we chose

We checked both tools against their official websites on 20 October 2026: Anthropic's pricing, model and help pages, and OpenAI's pricing and help pages. We left out any detail the official sites did not state. We did not use review sites, and we have not compared answer quality. Plans change often, so check claude.com/pricing and chatgpt.com/pricing before you pay.
