Gemini vs ChatGPT (2026): Which Should You Use?

Short answer: Choose Gemini if you already live in Google's apps (Gmail, Docs, Drive) or want a low-cost paid plan, because Google's plans start at $4.99 per month and bundle extra storage. Choose ChatGPT if you want more paid price points to pick from (Go, Plus and three Pro levels). Both have a free plan, so the easiest test is to try each on your own tasks.

This guide compares the two assistants using only what OpenAI and Google state on their own websites. We have not made any claims about which gives "better" answers, because that depends on the task and neither company publishes a fair head-to-head for everyday use.

Gemini: what it is and who it suits

Gemini is Google's AI assistant. It runs in the Gemini app and inside Google products. It suits people who already use a Google Account every day and want an assistant that sits near their email, documents and files.

Gemini free plan

Google lists the Free plan at $0 per month with a Google Account. It says Free gives access to its Flash-Lite model and, in the Gemini app, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live (voice conversations), Canvas and Gems (custom assistants). Free also includes 15 GB of storage shared across Gmail, Drive and Photos.

Google's help page says the Free plan has "standard" usage limits and a 32k-token context window. Google's help page also says Deep Research may be unavailable without a plan during periods of high demand.

Gemini paid plans

  • Google AI Plus - $4.99 per month. 2x the Free usage limits, video generation and Daily Brief, plus 400 GB of storage. Google's help page lists a 128k-token context window for this plan.
  • Google AI Pro - $19.99 per month. 4x the Free usage limits and a 1 million token context window. Google lists Gemini 4 Argon, Pro and Flash models, Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Vids, and 5 TB of storage.
  • Google AI Ultra - starting at $99.99 per month. Two levels are shown: $99.99 per month for 5x the Pro usage limits and $199.99 per month for 20x. Storage starts at 20 TB.

Google says its AI plans are only available for ages 18 and over, and that you can cancel anytime, with no refunds for partial billing periods except as required by applicable law. Google also says Gemini 4 Argon is available in the Gemini app to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers from 13 October 2026.

Gemini features worth knowing

  • File uploads: Google's plans page advertises "up to 1,500 pages of file uploads". It does not tie that figure to a specific plan.
  • Image generation: available on every plan. Google's help page lists Nano Banana 2 for images, with the option to redo images with Nano Banana Pro on Plus and above.
  • Voice: Gemini Live is built into the chat so you can switch between talking and typing, and you can show Gemini what you are seeing while you talk.
  • Integrations: Gemini in Gmail and Vids on Plus, and in Gmail, Docs and Vids on Pro. Google's announcement says the Gemini app also connects to more than 40 apps, including Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify.
  • Usage limits: limits refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit, and Google says they may change without notice. Video generation generally uses the most.

ChatGPT: what it is and who it suits

ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant. It suits people who want a wide range of paid tiers, from a low-cost plan up to very high usage, and who like having tools such as projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs in one place.

ChatGPT free plan

OpenAI's pricing page lists a Free plan with unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails. Messages with file uploads and image creation are limited. Web search is included, deep research is limited, and projects are available. Model names for Free and Go differ between OpenAI's pricing and help pages, so check OpenAI's model help page for the current default.

ChatGPT paid plans

  • Go - $8 USD per month in the US, as listed in OpenAI's pricing docs. OpenAI's January 2026 Go announcement says Go pricing is localised in some markets. OpenAI's current pricing page did not show a dollar figure when we checked, so confirm the price in your country before you subscribe. The pricing page says Go may include ads. Go adds more messages with tools, more uploads, and more image creation than Free.
  • Plus - $20 per month. OpenAI's help centre states $20 per month, billed monthly, with no annual billing. It lists priority access at peak times, higher usage limits, voice conversations, image generation, file uploads, and Deep Research where available. The pricing page lists a 256K reasoning context for Go and Plus.
  • Pro - $100, $200 or $500 per month. There are three Pro tiers. All include Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation, memory and file uploads. Only the $500 tier includes "Ultrafast". OpenAI states that Pro does not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model.

OpenAI also sells Business and Enterprise plans for teams. We have not covered them here because the pricing page does not list their prices.

ChatGPT features worth knowing

  • Models: OpenAI's help centre says the GPT-6 options in the model menu are powered by GPT-6 Sol, with GPT-6 Pro powered by GPT-6 Astra. Plus gets Medium and High thinking levels. Pro adds Extra High and the Pro model.
  • File uploads: limited on Free, with more on Go and Plus.
  • Voice: listed on every plan, expanded on Go and Plus and unlimited on Pro (subject to abuse guardrails). Voice with video is listed for Go, Plus and Pro.
  • Web search: listed as included on Free, Go, Plus and Pro.
  • Integrations and extras: plugins, projects, memory, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and Codex. Which plans include which varies, so check the pricing page.
  • Context limits: the pricing page lists 27K tokens for Free and 54K for Go and Plus on the standard "GPT Instant" setting. For reasoning models it lists 256K for Go and Plus and 400K for Pro.

Choose Gemini if...

  • You already use Gmail, Google Docs and Drive and want an assistant built into them.
  • You want a cheap paid step. Google AI Plus is $4.99 per month and includes 400 GB of storage.
  • You want extra cloud storage as part of the plan (5 TB on Google AI Pro).
  • You want a very large context window at the $19.99 level. Google lists 1 million tokens for Google AI Pro.

Choose ChatGPT if...

  • You want a choice of five paid price points: Go, Plus and three Pro tiers.
  • You want custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and Codex alongside the chat.
  • You want a flat $20 per month plan with voice, image generation, file uploads and Deep Research listed together.
  • You do not need Google app integration and prefer an assistant that is separate from your Google account.

How we chose

We compared the two tools against their official websites on 20 October 2026: OpenAI's pricing and help pages, and Google's Gemini plans and help pages. We left out anything the official sites did not state. We did not use review sites, and we have not compared answer quality. Prices and plans change often, so check the official pricing pages before you pay: chatgpt.com/pricing and gemini.google/subscriptions.
