Godwit is an open-source, AI-native desktop email client that works with any IMAP or SMTP account on macOS, Windows and Linux.
Its built-in assistant, Wit, reads the mail you have synced, answers questions about it, reads attachments such as PDF, Office and CSV files, and drafts replies. Wit asks for your approval before anything is sent.
AI actions let you summarise, translate, adjust the tone and length of text, and pick from quick replies, whether you are working on a single message, a selection or a draft.
You choose the model. Godwit supports any OpenAI-compatible service (Chat Completions or Responses) or Anthropic-compatible service, including local runners such as Ollama and LM Studio, and API keys are kept in the system keychain.
The mail side covers IMAP and SMTP sync, offline changes, conversation threads, full-text search and HTML compose, with automatic setup detection for Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Yahoo, QQ Mail, 163/126, Lark/Feishu, DingTalk and others.
It can be extended by dropping in a SKILL.md file to add a button, writing TypeScript plugins with declared permissions, or connecting MCP servers to give Wit external tools. A godwit mcp server also lets agents such as Claude and Cursor read mail and create drafts, but never send.
Privacy is a core design choice: there is no Godwit account, no telemetry and no relay server. Mail, drafts and the search index stay on your computer, and remote images are blocked by default.
