Handsy AI is an open-source hardware and software setup that lets an AI agent operate a physical iPhone, reading the screen and carrying out tasks in the phone's real apps.
It uses a low-cost Seeed XIAO ESP32-S3 board, around USD 7, connected to the iPhone by USB-C. The board receives the phone screen through AirPlay Screen Mirroring and sends taps, swipes and typing back to the phone as a USB mouse and keyboard, with no jailbreak needed.
The agent decides each next step from screenshots and can tap, double-tap, hold, drag, swipe and type, handling tasks such as setting an alarm or searching for cafes in Maps.
There are two ways to control the phone: the Handsy iPhone app, where you set a goal and can watch or step in, or the Handsy CLI, which connects an AI agent on your computer to the phone over MCP. The app takes priority when both are active.
It integrates with Claude Code, Codex and other MCP-compatible agents, with install commands for Mac, Linux and Windows.
It requires an iPhone XS or newer on iOS 18. The iPhone app is listed as coming soon to the App Store and the CLI release is in preparation, with setup, hardware and CLI guides in the docs.
Pricing: the software is open source under the MIT licence, with the firmware's AirPlay receiver under GPL-3.0. The only cost listed is the hardware board and a USB-C data cable.
