2G is an AI-powered sampler instrument from Scrap Brain Audio that is inspired by the handheld mobile phones of the early 2000s. You describe the sound in your head, its Neural Synthesis engine generates it, and you can then edit the sample and play it on your keyboard.
The idea behind 2G is to imagine what neural sound synthesis might have been like on the devices of that era, so the instrument both looks and sounds like an early-2000s handheld.
Once a sound is generated, 2G runs loop analysis that compares timbre, volume and vibrato to find loop points. It searches for regions that avoid abrupt shifts and short repetitions, smooths transitions with a crossfade and offers up to three loop candidates, so a sample can be sustained by holding the key.
Root note analysis compares pitch measurements across sections of the sample. When a consistent pitch is found, it measures and corrects any fine-tuning difference on playback, and samples with no clear pitch are marked as Unpitched.
Sound shaping controls let you trim the start and end of a sample, set Attack and Release, and alter the tone with Brightness, Detune, Noise, Quality and Formant controls. You can also load your own samples instead of generating sounds.
A small speaker simulation models the narrow frequency range, resonances and diaphragm movement of mobile device speakers, including a voice coil heating model that compresses the sound during long, loud playback. Its 16 kHz mono character can be bypassed with a single switch.
2G runs on Windows 10 or later (64-bit) as a VST3 plugin or standalone app, and on macOS 11 Big Sur or later (Apple Silicon and Intel) as an AU, VST3 or standalone app. It needs about 50 MB of disk space.
Pricing: a free plan includes the full instrument, unlimited use of your own samples, 20 generations a month and the Basic sound engine. A Studio plan costs US$10 a month with 200 generations a month and the Studio sound engine, with a 7-day free trial. One credit equals one successful generation and unused Studio credits do not roll over.
It is suited to music producers, sound designers and hobbyists who want lo-fi, retro handheld-style sounds created from text descriptions inside their DAW.
