How It Spread is a research library of viral case studies that traces how films, products, memes and campaigns went viral, from the first post to the peak, with an MCP server so AI agents can query the cases directly.
The library holds more than 1,600 cases. Each one embeds the original content, dates each step of its spread, shows who amplified it and where it jumped between platforms, and cites its sources.
Key features include per-case timelines charting activity across box office, press, YouTube, Reddit, TikTok, Instagram, the open web and retail, plus a Spread Score from 0 to 100 broken into reach, contagion, breadth, velocity and longevity.
Cases can be searched and filtered by category, and each one explains the mechanics behind why it worked. The site also tracks new breakouts as they grow and offers a weekly newsletter of new cases.
Its MCP server connects AI agents to the library with read-only tools to search cases, get a case and list mechanics, and every answer cites its case. It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Cursor, LM Studio, VS Code, Gemini CLI and Codex, and basic access needs no API key.
Pricing: a free account includes scores, media, full timelines and saved cases, with limited access to recommended actions and sources. Pro is listed at USD 13 per month (USD 156 billed yearly) and adds recommended actions on every case, all sourced numbers, radar alerts, deck exports and the full API and MCP record. Team is USD 20 per seat per month.
It is suited to marketing strategists, brand and content teams, and researchers who want evidence on how content spreads, along with the AI agents they use.
