ScribeCrate Live is an open-source, self-hosted real-time transcription server that turns live microphone audio and audio streams into text on your own server.
It is powered by WhisperLive and faster-whisper and uses Whisper models. Clients stream audio over WebSocket and receive progressive text as words arrive, with segments that can change until they are finalised.
With a suitable multilingual Whisper model it can also translate speech into English, set through the client or the WebSocket handshake.
A separate REST service offers an OpenAI-compatible POST /v1/audio/transcriptions endpoint on port 8000 for file transcription clients, so live streams and uploaded recordings use different input flows.
Key features include voice activity detection to skip silence, a choice of supported Whisper models, API-key authentication with a generated key stored across restarts, and a persistent model cache that allows offline operation once models are downloaded.
It runs in Docker on a supported Linux host. CPU images support amd64 and arm64, and a separate CUDA image provides NVIDIA GPU acceleration on amd64. Images are built and published through public GitHub Actions workflows.
Transcription runs locally on the server you operate. You supply the client that captures or streams audio, and a Google Colab demo lets you try it with sample audio.
Pricing: ScribeCrate Live is free and open source under the MIT licence. It is also offered as part of the wider Self-Hosted AI Stack.
