boat is a sandbox platform for AI agents that gives each agent its own persistent Linux virtual machine, built for agent factories, programmatic use and humans.
Each sandbox is a full Ubuntu machine with SSH and SCP access, Docker support inside the VM, a dedicated IPv6 or IPv4 address, a 60fps virtual desktop and fast disk-level forking from a snapshot.
Docker, VS Code, Chrome, Ghostty, the GitHub CLI, Rust, Node.js and Bun come pre-installed, and users can run any other devtool, language or workflow.
It works with coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode, and a boat prompt command runs Claude or Codex inside a sandbox.
Key CLI commands cover creating a sandbox, SSH and SCP, forking from a snapshot, stopping to snapshot and pause billing, opening the virtual desktop and listing sandboxes. Any command can output JSON for scripting.
For programmatic use there is an HTTP API plus Python and TypeScript SDKs, with documentation provided as clean markdown.
Sandboxes run in EU regions (Germany, Finland and France). Self-serve plans scale from 100 to 2,000 active sandboxes per account, and the default sandbox lifetime of one hour can be changed.
Pricing: a 7-day free trial includes 25 compute hours, then plans start from 20 USD per month. Usage is billed by the second, with 20 USD buying about 555 hours of 4 vCPU and 8 GB VM time. Small, default and large sandbox sizes use that time at 0.5x, 1x and 2x rates.
