WebAI by Opera lets websites and browser extensions use AI models that run locally on your own computer, inside the Opera browser, without sending page content to a cloud AI service.
It is now in early preview across Opera One, Opera GX and Opera Neon. Local inference is built into the browser, so there is no separate AI app to install, no local server to configure and no API key to obtain.
WebAI is based on a proposed web standard backed by companies including Google and Microsoft. Opera's version supports a range of compatible local models, including open-weight models provided through Opera and compatible models already on your device, so developers are not tied to one model provider.
For developers it introduces the Prompt, Decision and Semantic Embeddings APIs for generating text, classifying information and finding relationships between pieces of content. The playground site also lists Summarizer, Writer, Rewriter, Translator and Proofreader APIs, and shows which ones are available in your browser.
Opera provides hands-on API playgrounds, small example apps for text input, embeddings and decisions, and demo extensions such as Project Lens, which highlights the paragraphs of an article most relevant to your project, and Got It?, which quizzes you on an article you just read.
WebAI is opt-in. Nothing is downloaded until you turn it on in Settings, and it can be switched off at any time.
Pricing: WebAI is free and built into the Opera browsers, with no per-request cloud costs for developers.
It is suited to web and extension developers, independent developers and small teams who want to add private, on-device AI features without running AI infrastructure.
